I was surprised to learn today that cocoa may actually be a fruit. The cocoa tree produces the cocoa pod which contains a seed called the cocoa bean. Cocoa is produced from the cocoa bean.
There has been some recent research indicating a link between cocoa powder has nearly twice the amount of antioxidants of red wine, and as much as three times the antioxidants found in green tea. These studies have shown the result of consuming cocoa products may result in a reduced risk of blood clots, strokes and heart attacks.
It has also been stated that cocoa appears to have anti- aging and anti- inflammatory properties. Cocoa is a great source of the minerals magnesium, sulphur, calcium, iron,zinc, copper, potassium, manganese and some B vitamins.
Fresh cocoa beans are highly rich in the type of bioflavonoid called flavanol which are very strong antioxidants that help maintain healthy blood flow and blood pressure. These flavanols prevent fatty substances in the bloodstream from oxidizing and then clogging the arteries.
